Other Assignments

Additional Assignment 1: Professional Membership

Join a professional association. You should show evidence of membership in either AASL (American Association of School Librarians) and/or CSLA (California School Library Association) or some other association of professionals dealing with school libraries.

Additional Assignment 2: Knowville

Contribute to, and participate in http://knowville.org
by editing several activities in Knowville and contributing one fun activity that stimulates reading, viewing, listening, writing, or doing.

Additional Assignment 3: Attendance at Class

Be sure to attend and participate in class on Elluminate. Attendance is mandatory from the standpoint that activities done in class will add to your grade and there is no makeup for these activities. For attending and participating in a class session you will receive 10 points. If you cannot attend a class, then you can retrieve and view the recording. If you view the recording and email the grad assistant your contribution or reaction to the topics discussed, then you will receive 5 points for that class. If this is not received within a week of the class, you will receive a zero for that class participation.

Additional Assignment 4: Grant Writing

Write a grant (or show that you have already written one, or make major progress in writing one); assist in the writing of a grant; or demonstrate that you have already written a grant. One way to fulfill this assignment is to write a grant for the Laura Bush Foundation at http://www.laurabushfoundation.org/foundation.html. With the change in administration, one wonders if the Laura Bush Foundation is going to continue. Because this foundation is targeting funds only for schools in poverty, you might have to adopt a school (but don't do one for a school that is not committed to having a full time library media teacher). Another way is to write a grant for your PTA to fund LMC programs/materials, or a grant for a local charitable group. In order to facilitate this, discussion should occur in the comments section of the blog.

Additional Assignment 5: Assessment Measure

Build and test at least one measure for linking the school library media program to achievement. This can be done in your own school library, or can be planned if you are not currently employed.

I'm starting to think about some of the additional assigments. What are the criteria for these projects? Are we required to do all of these and when are the due dates? Thanks!

margaret martin said...

my thoughts exactly.

Tiffany Mair said...

What questions do you have in terms of criteria?

I have emailed Dr. Loertscher to clarify the due dates.

I'll let you know when I find out....

You have until the end of the course to complete all of these assignments.

What are the expectations for the grant writing assignment if we do not currently work in a school? Are we expected to create a grant proposal for a ficticious school? Just want to clarify so I'm not headed in the wrong direction...thanks.

Hi! I'm just trying to figure out what else needs to be done since I might need to take a little break in April.

(Assignment 1) I am not a school librarian and have never been. Can I still join AASL and CSLA even when I am not a school librarian?

(Assignment 2) Per Dr. L's email regarding knowville, when would be know whether this assignment will be canceled?

(Assignment 4) The assignment specifications make it sound like we actually need to or have already written a grant but Dr. L's email sounded like we only needed to "make progress" in writing a grant. Could you clarify? And how do we show that we "made progress"?

Thanks!

Please note that I crossed out the Knowville assignment as Dr. Loertscher has canceled this item.

Thanks, Tiffany

For those worried about the grant writing, there is always the Grant webinar which you could watch and write a reflection on it.

(Thanks again Tiffany for the link)

I have the information regarding the webinar on learning commons on Thursday, May 7, but I do not have the info on the Wednesday, May 6 webinar that can be used for our assessment assignment. Can someone please send me the info.?

Thanks.

Charlama said...

Dr. Loertscher sent the info.

Thanks.

Are you all members of CSLA or AASL? It's $45/$50 to join. Anybody know of any kind of discount (other than the Student membership that they offer)?

Tiffany Mair said...

Dr. Loertscher has been crediting students who can prove membership in CLA or ALA.

I hope this is helpful.

I turned in my individual learning commons assignment weeks ago and it hasn't been graded yet...is anyone else experiencing the same?

Jung Ah Lee said...

When is the last day of this semester e.g. when all these assignments are due?

Jung Ah Lee said...

Kim, I got my grade for indiv commons on Apr 19th but I have not received a grade for group commons so I think Dr. L might not be done with indiv commons yet.

Tiffany Mair said...

Hi everyone,

Dr. Loertscher is grading the individual and group learning commons assignments in the order they were received. He was traveling quite a bit these last few weeks so he's getting caught up with grading now. Please hang in there! :)

The last day of the semester is Wednesday, May 13th.

I'll see you in tonight's meeting!

Can we watch the Thursday webinair and get credit for the assessment measure assignment?

Charlama said...

The assessment webinar was on Wednesday and you should be able to watch an archived version, write up a summary, and use it for the assignment.

Katie G. said...

Anyone have any idea where we can access the webinar? I listened to it on Wednesday but missed a few things in my notes.

Charlama said...

I'm not sure about where to find the archived evidence webinar. Try using your original email link. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest contacting Dr. L. directly.

Good luck.

You can access the webinar for assessment at http://www.davidvl.org/CA_LMC_Evidence.wmv
The one from Thursday is
http://www.davidvl.org/Learning_Commons_Webinar.wmv

I hope that helps.

From Dr. Loertscher's email:

They'll need a PC or a Mac with a media player that can play .wmv files. A good one for the mac is VLC (which is a google search away).

Kim Leng said...

I downloaded the VLC to my computer...can't get it to work. I am able to listen to the webinar w/o the VLC. If I can't figure out how to work it, I might have to just listen...or has anyone figured out how to work it?

Michele Gilchrist said...

I downloaded VLC for Mac as well, and was only able to get audio. I just listened to it. -Michele

I've almost given up on the webinars, I'll give it one more try on my husbands PC.

I'm wondering how to send the Vision Project, I did a Google Docs presentation but I can't remember how to add the speaker notes . I downloaded it as a pdf, but when I view it, no speaker notes.

How did you send yours?

Charlama said...

Wow, I'm sorry the webinars haven't worked for you. I watched the Evidence one and the LC one live, but watched the grant one yesterday. I had no problems. I hope you are able to get it working.

As for sending the Vision Project, I did it in word and then saved it as a pdf. I just put it as an attachment using Angel and there wasn't any problems. I don't remember the details, but if you go back to the Elluminate sessions, probably the first or second one, Tiffany demonstrated how to save speaker notes and you could find out if you are saving it incorrectly. I vaguely recall that you have to save it slightly differently in order to get the speaker notes.

Anyone know where/how I do the Sotes?

Good luck and thanks,
Charlama

Jung Ah Lee said...

To add speaker notes, (1)open your Google presentation (2) click on the square with + and mouth inside. The square in on the bottom right corner. (3) Add text to the speaker notes section that appears on the right hand side when you click on that square button.

To print speaker notes, (1) go to files menu in the Google docs (not the browser) (2) select print (3) make sure speaker notes option is checked (4) save as pdf.

SOTES is in MySJSU (I think under self something...)

Tiffany Mair said...

Isabel, have you had any better luck with the webinars?

Thanks for great directions on speakers notes, Jung Ah.

You can find SOTES on

my.sjsu.edu > Self Service > Online SOTE ratings

(Be sure you're looking at the left-hand side of the screen).

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks, Tiffany

I was looking over how much each assignment was worth after submitting them and realized that the individual learning commons was worth the same amount as the additional assignments such as the grant writing and the assessment measure and even less than the basic reading log. I feel like I spent a whole lot more time on my individual learning commons than I did on some of these additional assignment and perhaps as much as I did for the basic read log... or more... I just wish it was worth more...

Regarding slides for the webinars -- I took a very rough notes of what I saw on the slides for the two webinars in May. It's really late now but if anybody wants them I can email them to you. If I read the comments sooner to see what the problem was, I would've been able to share earlier but I was overwhelmed with the finals this week...
